Launched in 1979, Tung Wah Charity Gala is so far the longest lasting local TV fund-raising programme in Hong Kong and has registered the largest number of participants. In fact, Tung Wah Charity Gala is not just a TV show, but a huge community fund-raising programme comprising the public and private housing estates fund-raising competitions, charity rides on public light buses and taxis, charity sales at Tung Wah community service centres, etc. Each year in December, the finale TV show is telecast on TVB Jade and TVB HD Jade for more than 7.5 hours with130 donation hotlines (1878 333) operating to collect donations during the programme.
