Green Initiative Item 1 – Green Roof

Green roof enhances thermal insulation, especially the top floor level, and alleviate the urban heat island effect. Besides, green roof provides amenity and aesthetic environment to both premises itself and the surroundings. It could also bring educational benefits such as learning the benefits of green roof and scientific research.

The Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF) relevant Vetting Subcommittee approved a total of 11 services units for TWGHs green roof pilot project, which including the Administration Headquarters, 6 schools, 2 community services centres and 2 properties. Details of the services units and the work progress are listed below:

TWGHs Chang Ming Thien College

A green roof system was constructed on the accessible roof above three classrooms. Three different types of plants were grown with the same soil thickness, each type above an individual classroom underneath. The types of plants include Zoysia Japonica ( 朝鮮草 ), Arachis Duranensis ( 蔓花生) , and Alternathera Dentata ( 紅龍草 ) . A seminar on recent research work on green roof project was delivered by Prof. WAI Wing Hong, Onyx on 10 November 2009.

TWGHs Mrs. Wu York Yu Memorial College

A green roof system was constructed on the accessible roof above three classrooms. Three different soil thicknesses, 10mm, 25mm, 50mm were used to grow the same plant Zoysia Japonica (朝鮮草) at the centre of the green roof, for comparing their effects on the result. Duranta Repens Golden (金連翹), Aglaia Odorata Lour (米仔蘭), Sansevieria Trifasciata Prain (金邊虎尾蘭), and Perilla frutescens (紫蘇) were grown at the periphery.
