Green Property Management Award
As early as July 2000, Kwong Wah Hospital and TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital already took pride in being the first 2 hospitals under the Hospital Authority to have obtained the ISO14001 Environmental Management System Certificate. In addition, the two hospitals were awarded the Certificate of Merit in the Hong Kong Eco-Business Awards: Green Property Management Award presented by the Environmental Campaign Committee in 2006.

Environmental Performance
Kwong Wah Hospital also took the lead in winning the Certificate of Merit in the Hong Kong Awards for Industries: Environmental Performance presented by the Business Environment Council in 2006.

Award of Wastewi$e Logo
To minimize adverse impact on the environment, the 5 hospitals under the Group, namely Tung Wah Hospital, Kwong Wah Hospital, Tung Wah Eastern Hospital, TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital and TWGHs Fung Yiu King Hospital, have over the years participated actively in the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence jointly organized by the Environmental Protection Department and Hong Kong Productivity Council. Havnig achieved their targets in energy and waste reduction within a specific time frame, individual hospitals were presented numerous awards over the years. The awards have spoken for the hospitals' commitment to environmental protection during the delivery of excellent medical and health care services.

Green Hospital Award
Together with Kwong Wah Hospital , TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital and TWGHs Fung Yiu King Hospital have all endeavoured to promote green living culture, such as engaging in programmes of energy saving and recycling for clothes, cans and papers. Distinguished results were achieved as the Hospital Authority granted the Green Hospital Awards-Gold Awards to Kwong Wah Hospital and TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital , and the Green Hospital Award-Merit Award to TWGHs Fung Yiu King Hospital in 2006.

Participation in Green Hong Kong ． Carbon Audit
Kwong Wah Hospital and TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital have become the first 2 hospitals participating in the "Green Hong Kong ． Carbon Audit" advocated by the government which is aimed at improving green house gases (GHG) emission performance. By signing the Carbon Reduction Charter, the 2 hospitals would be committed to combating climate change by conducting carbon audit on buildings and formulating implementation plans with measurable targets to promote and support the reduction of overall GHG emissions from the hospital premises. Both hospitals were granted the Carbon Reduction Charter in 2008 and participated in the 1st Anniversary of Green Hong Kong ． Carbon Audit in 2009 and displayed posters on their accomplishments at the 1st year anniversary ceremony.

Participation in Power Smart Energy Saving Contest
To further arouse the interest and awareness of staff and the public on the issue of environmental protection, Kwong Wah Hospital and TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital have joined the Power Smart Energy Saving Contest 2010 organized by Friends of the Earth (HK). Kwong Wah Hospital was presented the Certificate of Appreciation (Property Management). The two hospitals also participated in “Green Plus Programme 2010” organized by CLP.

Networking paperless operation at Chinese medical research centres
The Group's Chinese medical research centres have been operating in a paperless environment with the support of the self-developed Chinese Medicine Clinical Information System (CMCIS). The CMCIS supports appointment and registration, electronic medical records, herbs dispensing and payment, thus reducing the use of paper.

Installation of electronic decocting machines and water scrubbers at Chinese medicine dispensaries
The Group's Chinese medicine (CM) dispensaries use flameless decocting machines to decoct the herbs, thus reducing the use of fuel and noise generated. In addition, the CM dispensaries at Kwong Wah Hospital , Tung Wah Hospital , TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital and Tung Wah Eastern Hospital have installed water scrubbers to help filter the heat and odour generated by herbs decocting, minimizing the impact caused to the environment by the hospitals.

Bio-degradable herbal bags
While patients are encouraged to bring their own bags for taking herbs prescribed, all Chinese medicine dispensaries of the Group now use bio-degradable plastic bags for herb dispensing.

Energy management
To restrict inappropriate temperature adjustment of split-type air-conditioners, Tung Wah Eastern Hospital installed a locking device on thermostats. Moreover, to lessen the consumption of air-conditioners, solar films were affixed onto windows facing strong sunlight to provide thermal resistance. In addition, lighting control was implemented in different sections to enable partial switching off of lights to reduce energy consumption when natural lighting was sufficient. Separate metres were also installed to monitor electricity and water consumption of individual departments.

Purchase of 2 Environmental Friendly Rehabilitation Buses
Tung Wah Eastern Hospital newly purchased 2 new rehabilitation buses with Euro V model in 2010, the first introduction amongst Hospital Authority institutions for this type of vehicle. When compared with older model, the new vehicles emit about 85% less respirable suspended particulates and 50% less nitrogen oxides. .
