Jointly organised by TWGHs and the Chinese Culture Foundation of San Francisco,
the “Episode: Requiem” Exhibition was held for 2 months from 26 October to
23 December 2017 at the Chinese Culture Center in San Francisco, the USA.
Ms. Summer LEE, an American Chinese contemporary artist highlighted the bone
repatriation services of TWGHs through a contemporary art approach. The Board
led 24 student ambassadors and 16 principals from TWGHs secondary schools to
San Francisco to attend the press conference and the opening ceremony of the
Exhibition on 24 and 26 October 2017 respectively and attended other cultural
exchange activities. At a celebration dinner hosted by the Hong Kong Economic and
Trade Office, San Francisco, after the Opening Ceremony, the students, principals
and Board members met with guests from the San Francisco Bay area, and the
student ambassadors performed sand painting and “a capella” to make the dinner
a special and joyful one. The student delegation was one of the celebration events
for the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR.
The connection between TWGHs and the Chinese benevolent organisations in
San Francisco began in late 19th century. When the Chinese travelled overseas for
livelihood, Hong Kong was a stop for the voyage. With the special geographical
location and leveraging its networks, TWGHs facilitated the bone repatriation
services for the overseas Chinese communities to realise their desire to rest in
hometown. In the Exhibition, different art installations and media were used, such
as wall murals, sheer curtains and projections, to showcase TWGHs’ prominent
role as the bridge between China and America as well as the historical and cultural
significance of TWGHs’ bone repatriation services. Meanwhile, the Exhibition also
highlighted TWGHs’ respect for the traditional Chinese culture and the selfless love
and care for the Chinese diaspora.
