Go Green On Energy
With the contribution of the ECF and the Environmental Campaign Committee,
a small wind turbine and the photovoltaic system were installed at TWGHs Kwok
Yat Wai College, which are located at the renewable energy corner and the roof
respectively.
The off-grid small wind turbine located at the renewable energy corner is rated
at 1,100W. With the help of 390Wp photovoltaic system, the power generated
by the wind-solar hybrid system will be used to support the water pump in the
Aquaponics. The System is equipped with an automatic battery-grid changeover
device to ensure the aquaponics can be operated continuously.
The on-grid photovoltaic system located on the roof is composed of 10 photovoltaic
panels with a capacity of 1,950Wp. The System is connected to the grid of CLP
Power Hong Kong Limited to support the power usage of classrooms. It is estimated
to generate over 2,000kWh per year, which is equivalent to reducing about 1 tonne
of greenhouse gas emission.
The Municipal Solid Waste Charging Scheme
The Environment Bureau has announced that the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
Charging Scheme based on the “polluter pays” principle would be implemented by
the end of 2019 at the earliest. To prepare for the launch of MSWCharging Scheme,
TWGHs had successfully obtained funding from the ECF to implement the “Waste
Reduction Through Quality-based MSW Charging Project” at 12 TWGHs services
units and properties, including schools, community services units, the TWGHs
Administration Headquarters and properties. The Project was designed to simulate
the actual scenario of MSW charging so as to develop, test and recommend the
best practices that would help waste producers in the target sectors better prepare
for the charging scheme by reducing waste and saving more on their premises.
The Project was launched in January 2017 and concluded in October 2017.
Various educational and promotional activities, such as talks and green booths,
were organised to introduce MSW Charging Scheme and promote waste reduction
and clean recycling, with more than 7,000 participants. During the trial period,
11 participating services units yielded positive results in waste reduction, with
8 of them having achieved a 5% waste reduction target. Through the Project,
the management of the participating services units had gained experience
in the simulated operation of the Charging Scheme to prepare for its future
implementation and achieve waste reduction and clean recycling.
