The newly inaugurated Board of Directors of Tung Wah will continue to expand and enhance the Group’s diversified services
At the inauguration ceremony of the Board of Directors 2011/2012 of TWGHs held on 4 April 2011, Mr. CHANG Juo Hwa, Charles, Chairman of Tung Wah, stated that the new Board will uphold the fine tradition of Tung Wah and continue to strive for enhancing the well-being of people in Hong Kong.
Serving the community for 141 years, Tung Wah has been all along upholding its mission “To heal the sick and to relieve the distressed; to care for the elderly and to rehabilitate the disabled; to promote education and to nurture youngsters; and to raise the infants and to guide the children.” With a total of 232 service centres, Tung Wah has planned a series of service upgrading and expansion initiatives to fulfill the needs of the society. The Board will also adopt a prudent fiscal policy in the implementation of each development project and apply a cost- effective management approach.
Apart from maintaining the century-long free medical services, Tung Wah Board has allocated $156 million to finance the provision of free medical services, service enhancement and purchase of advanced medical equipments in its 5 hospitals and Chinese and Western medical services centres. Established in 1911, Kwong Wah Hospital will mark the celebration of its centenary in October 2011 by kickingoff a number of celebration programmes. While the pre-construction preparatory works of Kwong Wah Hospital’s Redevelopment Project are underway, Tung Wah Board and the Hospital Governing Committee of the hospital will work closely with the Hospital Authority to ensure the progress of the project.
On the side of education services, Tung Wah will continue to strengthen the teaching and learning of English in its schools in order to nourish the bilingual ability of students. Moreover, 7 Tung Wah primary schools have received grants from the “Quality Education Fund” to establish joint school network which enables real-time joint learning activities and exchanges with overseas or Mainland students. In response to the growing demand for tertiary education, Tung Wah College was established and is preparing to launch its first –ever university degree programme in Business Administration by September 2011.
There has been increasing demand for various social welfare services from the public. To this end, Tung Wah Board has reserved $90 million to implement a variety of projects for providing help to people in-need. To satisfy the demand for healthcare services and end-of-life care to the elderly residents, medical staff have provided out-reach Chinese medical services as well as mobile dental services at its care and attention homes for the elderly besides launching the “Dignified Dying Process” project to provide quality end-of-life care to elderly residents. Services for the disabled will also be strengthened to buttress the Group’s support for the disadvantaged groups such as organizing the i-Run – Hong Kong Special Marathon to promote the integration of disability to the society. In addition, Tung Wah will strengthen the drug prevention and education services for teenagers. Also, the third Integrated Centre on Smoke Cessation will be established to provide smoke cessation services to the public and help them build a healthy life style.
Since 2009, TWGHs has become the Environment and Conservation Fund’s first NGO Green partner which has received funding for implementing the organization-wide 3-year Green programme “Moving Towards a Green Organization”. The second phase of the Green programme, including the construction of Green roofs, installation of renewable energy devices and paper artefact incinerator will be implemented in the year.
