Inauguration Ceremony of TWGHs Board of Directors 2015/2016
Dedicated to Serve HK for 145 years

Holding fast to its service pledge for 145 years, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) is dedicated to serving people in need at all levels, caring for the sick and elderly, supporting the distressed and disabled, and nourishing the youth. For over a century, TWGHs has evolved with the times, advancing in its medical and health, education and community services to fulfill the changing needs of different groups and aspects of life across generations. The Inauguration Ceremony of the TWGHs Board of Directors 2015/2016 was held on 1 April 2015, with the honorable presence of Mr. TSANG Tak-sing, GBS, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs and officiating at the Ceremony.

Addressing at the Ceremony, Ms. Maisy HO, Chairman of the Board 2015/2016 denoted that the number of service centers of TWGHs has reached 292 in total, whereas the annual recurrent expenditure, including hospital services, is around $6.2 billion. To maintain its huge service network, covering the medical and health, education and community service areas, TWGHs will adopt a prudent financial approach to carry out its new initiatives, and enhance the cost-effectiveness and efficiency in monitoring its operations; with a view to further enhancing the corporate governance of the Group, the Board of Directors on the other hand, has devised 4 strategic directions for the coming 3 years, including strategically positioning to develop and consolidate, strengthening capacity building to sustain excellence in service provision, enhancing image, popularity and partnership network to maximize stakeholders’ support and modernizing governance and management to achieve greater accountability and performance.

This year, TWGHs will continue to enhance its service quality and introduce new services. For medical and health services, TWGHs will strive to sustain the fine tradition on the provision of free medical services and the continuous funding to 5 affiliated hospitals for their developmental works to expand and enhance the services as well as acquiring advanced medical equipment. Tung Wah Eastern Hospital is currently under refurbishment and TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital will also establish a Rehabilitation Medical Centre equipped with advanced instruments to enhance the rehabilitation programmes. Besides, new initiatives will be explored including the setting up of an osteoporosis clinic and a colonoscopy centre as well as the feasibility of expanding the Well Women Clinic at Tung Wah Eastern Hospital. TWGHs will be the first non-profit-making organization to establish a sizeable central decoction centre to provide quality supporting services for Chinese medicine services. The decoction centre will launch operation in mid-2015.

For education services, TWGHs will continue to nurture the young generation in Hong Kong. In 2015/2016, TWGHs will continue various kinds of school development works. The construction of superstructure works of the in-situ re-development project of TWGHs Wong Fut Nam College will be completed by end of 2015, while the construction works of the re-provision project for TWGHs Ma Kam Chan Memorial Primary School is also expected to be activated in 2015. The Group has always been paying attention to the training needs of teachers so as to encourage them to keep on acquiring updated knowledge. In the coming year, TWGHs will particularly focuse on the development of vice-principals and middle managers in schools. Collaboration with the Education Committee of the Beijing Municipal will be explored with the plan to offer exchange programmes to teachers. In addition, the Group will review the existing policy in English teaching and launch workshop on interviewing skills in English. In respect of post-secondary education, Tung Wah College is planning to set up additional simulation training room, constantly increasing the ratio of professional programmes and enhancing collaboration with the universities on the Mainland and overseas countries.

On community services, TWGHs has been vigorously developing services of good quality to meet various kinds of needs. With regard to the elderly services, the newly-built TWGHs Jockey Club Sunshine Complex for the Elderly will launch operation by the 4th quarter of 2015. The existing Enhanced Home and Community Care Services will be extended to Shatin, Tai Po and the North District to provide integrated nursing and caring services to frail elders living at home. To support an all-encompassing development for the youngsters, TWGHs has submitted related application to the Town Planning Board regarding the Youth Hostel Project on the Hollywood Road. Upon obtaining the approval from the Town Planning Board, application for funding will be submitted to the Legislative Council in this financial year to kick start the demolition of the old campus and the construction of hostel.

For the arm of poverty alleviation, the Group’s second community canteen will launch service in Shumshuipo to provide healthy hot meals at affordable price in August 2015. Likewise, food assistance programme will be launched, including the “Meals on Wheel” to provide aid for the elders with financial difficulties and the “Food-for-All Economic Mart” to supply daily consumables at low price.

Ms. Maisy HO, Chairman of TWGHs, extended her gratitude to the government and the zealous philanthropists for their staunch support, which contributed to the success of the various projects implemented by TWGHs. She pleaded for continuous support from the government and the citizens, which will help TWGHs achieve sustainable growth of its charity cause. This year, as TWGHs celebrates its 145th Anniversary, the Board is committed to serving society with inspiring compassion and unceasing effort, striving to embrace a brighter future for and with the Hong Kong community.

Since its establishment in 1870, TWGHs has been all along upholding its mission “To heal the sick and to relieve the distressed; to care for the elderly and to rehabilitate the disabled; to promote education and to nurture youngsters; and to raise the infants and to guide the children.” Nowadays, TWGHs has become the largest charitable organization in Hong Kong. For over a hundred years, TWGHs’ medical and health, education and community services have developed rapidly to fulfill the needs of the society and to provide high quality services at low rates. Today, TWGHs operates over 292 services centres, including 5 hospitals and health services and 27 Chinese medicine services centres, 53 education services centres, 205 community services centres that cover elderly, youth and family, rehabilitation and traditional services, whilst the Tung Wah Museum strives to promote, restore and preserve the heritage and relics of TWGHs. TWGHs Record Centre has been set up to preserve TWGHs’ valuable cultural assets.
