Objectives

To pay tribute to those who live up to our ideals and put into practice universal moral values including dignity, kindness, respect, impartiality and the spirit of humanity, and to promote students’ interest in English language writing, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) is organising the Good People, Good Deeds: English Story Writing Competition for primary & secondary students.

The competition provides young writers with a platform to explore the world of writing, to stretch their imagination, and most importantly, to care for the vulnerable in our society and to serve people. Students may write stories on how a person can make a difference simply by taking time to show love, appreciation and kindness to people around them.

Levels of Entry

The competition is divided into three levels:

  1. Junior (Primary 4 – Primary 6)
  2. Middle (Secondary 1 – Secondary 3)
  3. Senior (Secondary 4 – Secondary 6)

Each school may submit ten best entries, for which, certificates of participation would be awarded to the students. The best three writers submitted by a school will enter into the final competition. No individual entries will be considered.

The winning entries will be chosen by a panel of judges. The panel will comprise of representatives from Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and partner organisations.

Assessment Criteria

  • Promoting positive energy and ability to inspire the readers
  • Original ideas, imagination and content
  • Development of characters and plot
  • Use of language

Word Limits

The word limits for different level are as follows:

  1. For Junior level, an entry will not exceed 500 words
  2. For Middle level, an entry will not exceed 700 words
  3. For Senior level, an entry will not exceed 1000 words

Awards for each level

Gold (HK$3,000 book voucher)
Silver (HK$2,000 book voucher)
Bronze (HK$1,000 book voucher)
Merit (HK$200 book voucher)

Important Dates

Submission Deadline: 21st November 2014
Selection: January – February 2015
Result Announcement: 25th April 2015
Awards Presentation Ceremony: 25th April 2015

Submission Guidelines

  • All entries must be accompanied by a duly completed official entry form.
  • All entries must be submitted in accordance with the requirements and entry format or it will be disqualified.
  • All entries must be submitted in a sealed envelope. Please mark on the front of the envelope “Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Good People, Good Deeds: English Story Writing Competition and mail to:
    • Education Division
      5/F, TWGHs Wong Fung Ling Memorial Building
      12 Po Yan Street, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong.
  • No individual entries from students will be considered.
  • No more than ten entries per level will be accepted from schools.
  • Once the entries are submitted, no corrections/amendments for any reason will be accepted. Please check thoroughly before submission.

Entry Format

All entries must be typed.
Paper: A4
Font Colour: black
Font Type: Arial or Times New Roman
Font Size: 12 and double line spacing with 3 cm wide margins all around
Page Number: All pages should be numbered at bottom centre.
PLEASE DO NOT INSERT ANY IDENTIFICATION (NAME AND/OR SCHOOL NAME) IN THE ENTRY.

Anthology Publication

All award-winning works may be published, along with a selection of shortlisted entries. Tung Wah Group of Hospitals reserves the right to “lightly edit” works that would be published.

Awards Presentation Ceremony

There will be an Award Presentation Ceremony on 25th April 2015.

Reminders

  • All entries must be original works of students who are the sole author.
  • The entries should not have been published in any format or media.
  • Entries with plagiarized texts will be disqualified.
  • By entering Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Good People, Good Deeds 2014: English Story Writing Competition, the entrant gives TWGHs permission to contact him/her with regard to the competition.
  • TWGHs retains copy right to all the stories received for the competition.
  • The deadline for entries is 21st November 2014. All submissions received after this date will not be considered. Schools are reminded to allow sufficient time to prioritise the entries.
  • TWGHs reserves the right to decline any entry not meeting theguidelines. Students are suggested to check the entry for any mistakes and missing words.
  • The shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a selection interview.
  • The competition will be judged by a panel of judges. In the event of a tie, the award will be shared. The judges’ decision will be final.
  • The competition is organised by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. TWGHs has the right to alter the competition and competition rules or make exceptions without any prior notice.
